Toe to Toe: Santa Cruz vs Mijares

Current WBC Super Bantamweight Leo Santa Cruz put his title on the line for 12 rounds against the seasoned veteran Cristian Mijares. Despite sustaining a bad cut over his right eye from an accidental clash of heads, Santa Cruz fought on & fought well, true to form. The judges scored the bout 120-108, 120-108, & 119-109, all in favor of Santa Cruz. Mijares had all but guaranteed victory by stating earlier in the week that Santa Cruz knew he would lose. Asked by Jim Gray after the fight if the cut bothered him, Santa Cruz replied, “No, just the blood.” Santa Cruz earned the highest pay day of his career thus far, at $500,000, while improving to 27-0-1. The loss was the 8th of Mijares career, compared to his 49 victories.
