In what has shaped up to be a fairly impressive fight card, Golden Boy promotions has announced that Paulie Malignaggi will face “Showtime” Shawn Porter on the April 19th card featuring Beibet Shumenov (14-1) vs Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2). The bill also features Peter Quillin putting his record (30-0) & title on the line against Lucas Konecny (50-4). The bout between Malignaggi & Porter was announced Wednesday.
Porter is coming off what is considered the most impressive win of his career thus far. In December, Porter defeated Devon Alexander by unanimous decision to win the IBF welterweight title. Talk was occurring of Porter being the next opponent for Keith Thurman Jr., but in various conversations, Porter stated concerns about the profitably of such a fight. Thurman is also slated to fight in late April, perhaps on the same day, on a card that will also feature junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse. Porter seems quite confident with the selection according to his Twitter account. Porter stated:
Excited to announce my next casualty will be @PaulMalignaggi on April 19th at the DC Armory. Get tickets soon, u don't wanna miss Showtime!

Paul Malignaggi seems like a questionable opponent to many, but the veteran has proven himself against some stiff competition. While his last victory involved less than stellar action, it was over a veteran in Zab Judah. Prior to the Judah fight, Malignaggi lost a split decision & his weltereweight title to Adrien Broner. The fighter from Brooklyn has not displayed much power, but it’s his simple craft in using his jab that makes him a guy that continues to challenge the top of the welterweight class. This fight will, no question, be critical for Malignaggi’s career. If he truly wants to remain an elite welterweight, he will need to come up with a victory over Porter. He certainly appears confident as he also took to Twitter on Wednesday:
APRIL 19TH THE WORLD WILL SEE ME CHAMP AGAIN!!! #SMK

The card is certainly an entertaining one & it will be broadcast on Showtime’s regular networking schedule. April is shaping up to be a great month for fight fans, with the Timothy Bradley vs Manny Pacquiao rematch on April 12th & a still being scheduled card featuring Thurman & Matthysse.
