Namibian competitor and former WBO Bantamweight champion Paulus Ambunda (21-1, 10 KOs) is getting another shot at gold as he takes on English powerhouse Scott Quigg (28-0-2, 21 KOs) for the WBA Super Bantamweight title.
In a news release, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn announced that the fight would take place Sept. 13 at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester.
This will mark Quigg’s fourth title defense. He is coming off back-to-back second-round knockouts over Tshifhiwa Munyai and Diego Oscar Silva.
The champion has been on a tear since he stepped up in competition and captured the interim title in his rematch against Rendall Munroe back in 2012.
This is going to prove a good challenge for Ambunda, stepped up to 122 pounds to claim the vacant IBF International super bantamweight title and WBA International super bantamweight titles after beating Cristian Palma, back in May.
In addition to Ambunda and Hearn, the Sept. 13 show will feature as Anthony Crolla (28-4-1, 11KOs) making his third of the WBO Intercontinental Lightweight title against former world champion Gamaliel Diaz (37-10-2, 17 KOs), who dropped his WBC Super Featherweight title to Takashi Miura back in April.
Also on the card is Scotty Cardle vs. Kirk Goddings for the English Lightweight title in a British title final eliminator and Sam Eggington vs. Denton Vassell in a British Welterweight title eliminator. Sam Hyde, Gamal Yafai, Jack Massey and Liam Hanrahan are scheduled to compete at the event.
Matchroom Booking has laid quite the card for September where each bout – especially the three title matches – has the potential to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
