For world female welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus there is one more title she needs for her trophy case: the IBF female welterweight title. Now she’ll have a chance to add to her collection as she takes on the current champion, Croatia’s Ivana Habazin, Sept. 13, in Denmark. Braekhus’ (25-0, 7KOs) WBO, WBA and WBO titles are also on the line.
“The First Lady” of boxing is coming off a successful title defense back in June where she beat Germany’s Jessica Balogun for the second time in what was a one-sided affair.
Habazin (13-1, 5 KOs) is coming off a split-decision win over Sabrina Giuliani where she claimed the IBF strap. One year before she suffered her only loss against Eva Halasi.
Although this is great opportunity for Habazin, it also might be a bit of a mismatch. The Croatian fighter is still in the early stages of her career and does not have the experience that The First Lady has, not only just in fights, but also in the caliber of opponents. Giuliani is the only fighter Habazin has faced that has more than 10 wins on her record.
But that doesn’t mean Braekhus is coming in any less prepared. The First Lady is hungry for gold and I’m sure she’ll be adding that final touch to her world champion status before the night is over.
