Heavyweight prospect Andy Ruiz Jr. will fight in the main event will headline an event, Sept. 20 in Phoenix.
Ruiz (22-0, 16 KOs), will face former world titleholder and Arizona native Sergei Liakhovich. Known as “The Destroyer,” he is coming off an impressive second-round Manuel Quezada, retaining his NABF heavyweight title and WBO Inter-continental championship.
Although Liakhovich (26-6, 16 KOs) will be the most experienced opponent Ruiz has faced – not mention he’ll have the hometown crowd backing him – he still rebounding from a few setbacks in recent bouts. While he picked up a decision win over the unknown Chad Davis back in February, he lost the three fights before that one – all of them via knockout, including a first-round KO from Deontay Wilder.
Despite Liakhovich’s slump, this would be a good win for Ruiz that would help him get on track to a higher-ranked opponent and possibly a world title shot down the road.
As for Liakhovich, a win over Ruiz may not get him back to title contention but he’ll still be making strides to get back to where he was several years ago when he was the WBO Heavyweight champion.
