Leo Santa Cruz defends title in September

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marco Maidana will not be the only title fight on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In the co-feature bout, junior featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz will defend his title against Manuel Roman.

The 26-year-old Roman (17-2-3, 6 KOs) is taking the biggest fight in his career, having never quite gone all 12 rounds. Most of his competition has been lower-tier and he has fought mostly in six and eight rounders. He currently rides a two-fight winning streak.

Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15KOs), who will be making his third title defense, is excited for the fight.

“This is my second time fighting on a Floyd Mayweather pay-per-view undercard and I know that there is no bigger stage than this. Manuel Roman is a tough customer. I know he’s going to come prepared and try to take my title. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain, but I plan on leaving the ring with my hand raised.”

Other bouts on the card that were announced include Mickey Bey vs. Miguel Vazquez, Alfredo Angulo vs. James De La Rosa, John Molina Jr. vs. Humberto Soto.
