Two of Argentina’s biggest stars will clash next week. Marcela Acuna will be defending her WBO female super bantamweight title against Edith Matthysse, Aug. 23, at the Villa Ballester in front what will probably be a split-crowd.
This will be the second title defense for Acuna (41-6-1, 18 KOs). She won the title back in October 2013 when she beat Halanna Dos Santos via decision. Five months later she knocked out Estrella Valverde in the sixth round to retain her title.
Matthysse (12-6-1, 1 KO) is coming off a decision win over Ogleidis Suarez back in 2013. She’s gone 4-5 in her nine fights.
This should be an interesting fight as the two are no strangers to each other. Acuna and Mattysee squared off in May 2013 where the current super bantamweight champion picked up the decision. Although some critics might believe that Mattysse is not ready for a title match, the fact that she went the distance with Acuna may have influenced the WBO to sanction the bout.
One factor might be Mattysse’s eight-month layoff. With a red-hot crowd behind them, I’m sure Matthysse and Acuna will put on the performance that will keep spectators on the edges of their seats.
