Although Kell Brook and Anthony Dirrell captured champions, Omar Figueroa successfully defended his WBC lightweight title against Daniel Estrada. Figueroa (24-0-1, 18 KOs), stopped Estrada (25-3-1) in the ninth round.
In the latter portion of an entertaining match, both fighters traded enormous punches in the eighth round. Figueora received a gash over his left eye after a headbutt. Figueroa turned up the aggression and dropped Estrada with a right hand 40 seconds in the ninth stanza before finishing finishing him bout with a flurry of shots.
Estrada had a lot of momentum coming into this fight, riding an eight-fight winning streak that included back-to-back TKO wins.
Although this is only the first was only the first defense of his lightweight title, Figueroa said he intends to move up to 140 pounds for his next fight. Jorge Linares is scheduled to challenge Figueroa for the lightweight title, however he’ll probably have to wait to his get chance to fight for gold. Back in June, Figueroa beat Jerry Belmontes via split-decision to win the title.
