Brandon Rios in talks to face Provodnikov

Brandon Rios will have little time to reflect after on his disqualification win over Diego Chaves, earlier this month, as he is now in talks to face former WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov.

According to reports, Top Rank , Rios’ promoter, is targeting this fight for November and negotiations are already underway.

Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) won his last fight over Chaves in the ninth round after referee Vic Drakulitch stepped in and DQ’ed Chaves for throwing an elbow earlier in the round.

The former WBA lightweight champion is going to to have to convince his critic he’s still got what it takes to fight top competition. Before the Chaves fight , “Bam Bam” had back-to-back losses against Manny Pacquiao and Mike Alvarado – the latter he faced in a rematch of their October 2012 bout where Rios won by knockout. Then there was the controversial decision over Richard Abril where he won by split-decision.

Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KOs) has gone 4-2 in his last six fights. In his last bout he dropped his WBO light welterweight title to Chris Algieri via split-decision. If he can use his cardio and not run out gas, he could give Rios a good beating.

Hopefully there is not another disqualification.
