Former junior middleweight champion Austin Trout took the first step in regaining his junior middleweight title in the main event of the season finale of ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” after picking up a decision win over Daniel Dawson.
Trout (27-2-0, 14 KOs) used his speed to win the first rounds while shaking off the cobwebs in the process. rusty in the early going but managed to win the first two rounds with his massive speed advantage. Dawson (40-4-1, 26 KOs), who came in as the 25:1 underdog in the fight, caught Trout with a right hand in the third stanza, sending the former champion to the canvas, then followed it up with another knockdown.
Trout got his groove back midway through the fight, then dropped him with an overhand left in the eighth round. He continued to bust Dawson up until the final bell. All three judges scored the fight 97-90.
While this gets Trout back on the winning track, he might still need a couple of more wins against better opponents before campaigning for a championship bout.
