Former bantamweight champion and Nambian fighter Paulus Ambunda will have to wait to get another shot at gold.
According to promoter Matchroom Boxing, Ambunda suffered a hamstring injury during his training camp and has withdrawn from his Set. 13 bout against junior featherweight champion Scott Quigg at at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, England.
Ambunda (21-1, 10 KOs) suffered the first loss of his career one year ago after he dropped his WBO bantamweight title to Japanese competitor Tomoki Kameda. He rebounded from the loss back in May when he picked up a decision over Cristian Palma to claim both the vacant IBF International super bantamweight title and the vacant WBA International super bantamweight title. This would have been Ambunda’s first time fighting in the United Kingdom.
The event will feature Anthony Crolla against Gamaliel Diaz in a 12-round bout. 2012 Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua is also scheduled to compete on the card.
It’s a shame Ambunda won’t be able to compete. A replacement opponent for Quigg has not been announced at this time.
